Mackay Base is the first fully digital public hospital with medications management in a regional area.
The digital system gives the clinicians caring for you access to real-time information to allow the best clinical decisions to be made, providing safe and integrated care.
The Base, as it is affectionately called services a large geographic area comprising the Whitsundays, Isaac, and Mackay regions.
In 2010-2014 the Mackay Base Hospital underwent a $405 million redevelopment.
The hospital redevelopment included increasing bed numbers from 163 to 318, adding more operating theatres, a dedicated Coronary Care Unit, a larger Intensive Care Unit, new emergency and outpatients’ departments, renal support services, day oncology and a dental services unit, support services building and major services infrastructure, as well as an upgraded helipad and Carpark.
Specialist outpatients doctors fly into the Base regularly to service patients with a diverse range of medical needs.
The Mater Private Hospital
Mater Private Hospital Mackay has been providing excellence in clinical and pastoral care to the people of Mackay and surrounds since 1927.
Located on the northern bank of the Pioneer River since 2003, the hospital is a modern 105 bed facility featuring five operating theatres, a fully equipped day surgery unit, and a wide range of specialist clinical services.
In 2014 Mater partnered with James Cook University to open an onsite clinical training facility for local student doctors and nurses. This centre enables medical and nursing students to undertake full-time clinical training in Mackay.
